What I love most about the early Dylan stuff is how contemporary it still feels. The man was able to nab a bit of the American Fable, and capture it in song. “Don’t follow leaders. Watch the parking meters.” is perhaps more current in Chicago today than it was when it was written. It’s prescient. “Man in a trenchcoat, bad job laid-off, says he’s got a bad cough, wants to get it paid off.” is as contemporary now as it was in the 60s. Which has its own kind of sadness.
